Club gascon

Image
Utterly sublime, everything about this evening was wonderful. The small intimate room with a grandeur feel just perfectly suits a Michelin starred French restaurant. White table cloths and elegantly dressed staff respecting the barriers of being attentive and out of sight. We opted for the a la carte menu, starting with 2 dishes from the foie gras menu. Flamed foie gras smoked pine and aromatic razor clam. Theatrically served on a grill, the smoky aroma's still lingering in the air. The acidity from the vinegar cut through the rich perfectly seared meat. This along with the truffled foie gras on the rocks, was a perfect way to start. We followed this with barbecued gold fish with truffle and bacon sauce, maybe the best of the night. But with so many beautiful dishes it's a tough call. The glazed black cod with artichokes and crunchy grapes had tremendous depth of flavour and textures. For meat we had braised veal sweet bread, lobster sand (which was like a caviar) and cuttlefis...

Yauatcha

Kind of mixed emotions when writing on Yauachta, I was very excited to have lunch here, it's a restaurant I've craved for some time. Often riding passed the hustle and bustle of soho's broadwick street and feeling an instant attraction to the modern contemporary building on the corner. It's bright exterior and beautiful fish tank inside gives a vibrant welcoming feel, and lured me in. However I was left slightly underwhelmed with the food and service, taking at least 5 minutes to get the attention of table staff for a drink is not too impressive. I don't have to many bad things to say of my lunch, because it was enjoyable with some pleasant dishes. I just did not find too much to shout from the roof tops. Again I was dining alone so was unable to sample too many dishes but i started with pork belly puff and wagyu puff. Both dishes were slightly mediocre. The pork got slightly lost in the rich pastry and the beef lacked an Asian punch that you'd expect from a Chi...

Kiln

However much i enjoyed my dinner, I had this lingering feeling in the back of my mind, it's not quite the goat! The sister and original, smoking goat also in soho just trumped it for me. This being said I had a great dinner with no complaints, so comparing it to one of my favourite restaurants is probably treating it unfairly. I dined alone which is always a shame with small plates as you don't get to sample enough. However I ordered plenty for one. Starting with aged lamb and cumin skewer, beautifully charred in front of me on the open fire, and a smoked sausage with turmeric and fresh chilli, strong flavours and packed a punch. Dish of the evening was 'wild ginger and short rib curry from Burma' soft pieces of juicy short rib, swimming in a curry with deep layers of flavour that kept going and going, served with brown jasmine rice. Being the ever over indulger I am, I wasn't ready to throw in the towel. So I went with langoustines with kaffir lime and sweet mint. ...

Disfrutar

'Disfrutar' simply translated, enjoy. Me for one thinks they hit the nail right on the head with there naming. This stunning 30 course culinary experience was truly one of the best of my life. I would even go as far as to say the third best restaurant I've ever been. The chefs that gave us 'elBulli' one of the best restaurants the world has seen in the past 20 years, five times voted best in the world and three time runner up. In fact it did it not drop out of the top three for a stunning eight years. Although not without controversy but that's for another day. Yet again the team have a produced a jaw dropping menu. We opted for 'disfrutar' menu 30 scrumptious little plates to blow your mind. Starting with Pachino filled with caviar beluga, light airy roll full of flavour. The disfrutar olives with flower essence, I'm told are famous. I can see why, I was actually expecting an olive but was pleasantly surprised when it exploded in my mouth, releasing...

El cellar de can roca

Tremendous experience that just kept on giving. It all started with a 'trip around the world' simply put the brothers have taken influences from their recent food tour around the globe. Tasty little treats from Turkey, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Peru. Other canapés included olive ice cream hanging from a bonsai tree and a white truffle bun. We opted for the 'feast menu' 14 course experience with wine pairing by Josep Roca, the head sommelier and one of the three brothers who opened the restaurant in 1986 and built their current house in 2007. Jordi the pastry chef, then we have Joan the eldest brother 'master chef and architect of taste' and by the way what an achievement this is for the whole family, twice being named the worlds best restaurant and three time runner up. Currently sitting third. It's almost poetic how heart warming it is to follow in the family's footsteps and to be so warmly received by critics around the globe. This truly is a world cl...
